Lecture Title

Intensive Stuttering Therapy for Children and Adults. The Method and Attempts of Evaluation of Treatment Efficacy

Abstract

Intensive stuttering therapy (IST) is based on non-avoidance therapy and has been offered by the Sahlgrenska University hospital for about 20 years. It is a complement for individual therapy and patients are referred to IST from all parts of Sweden by their Speech and Language Pathologist at their home community. The therapy is divided on three weeks, spread over approximately a year. There are two different kinds of IST one for adults and one for children and their parents. Several studies have been made to evaluate the efficacy of this treatment and the results of these studies will be discussed at the seminar.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will learn:

  1. About the treatment goals and content of the Intensive stuttering therapy,
  2. To discuss about different variables that need to be taken into account in evaluating treatment efficacy,
  3. The outcome of therapy concerning speech and attitudes,
  4. The experience of parents and children participating in the therapy.
