Lecture Title
Treatment of the Young Stuttering Child With Mini-KIDS
Abstract
Based on the stuttering modification approach of Van Riper (1973) for adults and Dell (1979) for school aged children Patricia Sandrieser and Peter Schneider (2001) developed KIDS – an approach for stuttering children between the age of 2 and 6 years.
An overview is given over the early development of functional and dysfunctional coping with stuttering (motor behaviour, emotions and cognition, social environment) and the consequences for the goals of an early treatment of stuttering.
The topics relevant for planning and evaluating therapy are shortly described. The assessment of attitudes towards stuttering is presented in more detail. The criteria of treatment are discussed.
The main goal of Mini-KIDS is to increase the probability of a remission. This is done by teaching the child how to stutter without tension and negative emotions or cognitions (such as shame or guilt). The side effect is an assertive and easy stuttering in those children, who will experience no remission. The central issue of this workshop is the introduction of the methods of treatment. An intensive participation of the parents to support the therapy is necessary. A short glimpse on parental groups will be given.
Presentation with videosamples and exercises concerning the techniques of easy stuttering.
